For example a home-brew straight key is either home-brew or straight key style, NOT both. Using two different keys of the same style, for example two bugs, counts ONLY as one style of key. A certificate and Participation Point go to everyone making all 10 QSOs with each of two key styles and submitting their report before the deadline. Two key styles are required so a minimum of 2 QSOs are needed. A choice of an item made by master woodworker Gregg WB8LZG as shown on our prizes page here goes to someone selected via a random drawing from all who participate and submit a report for this month’s challenge. A person can only win once, then they become ineligible for future drawings. For your report tell us that you made the required 20 QSOs, or if not all 20, how many you did make. Also tell us what style of keys you used. If you think that your key is really unique everybody has seen a J , a Vibroplex, etc.

Also, note that all nouns can be verbed. English as a whole is already heading in this direction towards pure-positional grammar like Chinese ; hackers are simply a bit ahead of the curve. The suffix “-full” can also be applied in generalized and fanciful ways, as in “As soon as you have more than one cachefull of data, the system starts thrashing,” or “As soon as I have more than one headfull of ideas, I start writing it all down.
Another common form is “bufferfull”. Hackers have a strong aversion to bureaucratic bafflegab and regard those who use it with contempt. Similarly, all verbs can be nouned. This is only a slight overgeneralization in modern English; in hackish, however, it is good form to mark them in some standard nonstandard way.

This usually involved wrapping the cable with brass bands to keep it from unraveling and stripping it so that the individual layers could be seen. This cable was laid from France to England in the ‘s and is an interesting example of early telegraph cable design. Several pieces of this cable were generally saved and made into museum and display pieces to commemorate the laying of the cable. This process usually involved applying a metal band to one end of the cable, peeling back the other end to display the internal layers and construction, and signing the metal band with the maker’s name.
This is a commemorative piece of a submarine telegraph cable which was laid over years ago to connect France and England.

Martin made the first Vibroplex in or , about , Vibroplexes have been made, and the Original model Vibroplex is still being made after more than 90 years. Vibroplexes were by far the most predominant bug on land line telegraph systems like Western Union, Postal Telegraph, the railroads, and hundreds of others.
Beginning in the Twenties, commercial, military and amateur wireless operators began using Vibroplexes. Production peaked in the Fourties and Fifties along with the popularity of ham radio, but the Vibroplex Company is still making them — be sure to visit the Vibroplex Co. This Web page is intended to help owners identify their Vibroplexes, determine when they were built, and learn about the interesting company and people that made them.
It was basically a switch with a knob mounted on a spring-loaded lever. The design evolved somewhat until the modern design was invented and patented by Jesse Bunnell in In , Horace G. Dashes were made manually by pushing the lever the other way. Since only dots were made automatically, the key was called a semi-automatic key. Unfortunately, the Autoplex required a separate battery and was probably fairly expensive. Pushing a paddle mounted on one end of the lever to the right and holding it there caused a spring-mounted contact on the other end of the lever to vibrate against a stationary contact, making strings of dots.
Dashes were made manually by pushing the lever to the left and releasing it.

This is a blog about my ham radio experiences including vintage homebrew, QRP operating and the National Radio company. To see if I’m on the air right now click here Monday, April 23, Cathode Keying Safety As I participated in various radio events this past winter I thought about a safety issue common in budget and homebrew transmitters prior to about Many, if not most, of these transmitters used cathode keying with no regulation of the screen voltage.
In these transmitters it is common to find over volts across the key terminals. Some of my friends checked their homebrew transmitters. They found as much as VDC at the key terminals.
Today my shack includes equipment dating from the early 30s through current gear operating CW, SSB and PSK I’ve built many pieces of my own gear including .
Call sign — In broadcasting and radio communications, a call sign is a unique designation for a transmitter station. In North America, they are used for all FCC licensed transmitters, a call sign can be formally assigned by a government agency, informally adopted by individuals or organizations, or even cryptographically encoded to disguise a stations identity. The use of signs as unique identifiers dates to the landline railroad telegraph system. Because there was only one line linking all railroad stations.
In order to time, two-letter identifiers were adopted for this purpose. This pattern continued in operation, radio companies initially assigned two-letter identifiers to coastal stations and stations aboard ships at sea. These were not globally unique, so a company identifier was later added.
Vibroplex Bugs After the Autoplex and Original models, Vibroplex came up with numerous other models through the years, representing various levels of “improvement”. Below you will find a list of all the different models, along with pictures of each. Although it has changed hands several times over the years, Vibroplex is still in business today!

Here it is midnight, and this msg. I have smoked myself into a state of funk, the floor is covered with burnt matches, I am losing a perfectly good temper, and there is no sign that this will not continue all night long. What are we going to do about this business? Apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction — Apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction is a subgenre of science fiction, science fantasy or horror fiction literature in which the Earths technological civilization is collapsing or has collapsed. The story may involve attempts to prevent an event, deal with the impact and consequences of the event itself, or it may be post-apocalyptic.
Post-apocalyptic stories often place in a non-technological future world, or a world where only scattered elements of society. And recognizable modern apocalyptic novels had existed since at least the first quarter of the 19th century, however, this form of literature gained widespread popularity after World War II, when the possibility of global annihilation by nuclear weapons entered the public consciousness.
As shown above, the apocalypse is also depicted in visual art, the story may involve attempts to prevent an apocalypse event, deal with the impact and consequences of the event itself, or may be post-apocalyptic, and be set after the event. The scriptural story of Noah and his Ark describes the end of the original civilization. Noah is assigned the task to build the Ark and save the lifeforms so as to reestablish a new post-flood world, numerous other societies, including the Babylonian, had produced apocalyptic literature and mythology which dealt with the end of the world and of human society.
Many of which included stories that refer back to the Biblical Noah or describe a similar flood. The Epic of Gilgamesh, written ca, — BC, details a myth where the angry gods send floods to punish humanity, but the ancient hero Utnapishtim and his family are saved through the intervention of the god Ea. A similar story about the Genesis flood narrative is found in Sura 71 of the Quran, even in the Hindu Dharmasastra, the apocalyptic deluge plays a prominent part.
According to the Matsya Purana, the Matsya avatar of Lord Vishnu, at the time of deluge, Vishnu appeared as a horned fish and Shesha appeared as a rope, with which Vaivasvata Manu fastened the boat to the horn of the fish. Variants of this story appear in Buddhist and Jain scriptures.
To Telegraph Office Main Page The value of an old telegraph instrument, such as a key, depends on many things. The major factors are age, condition, rarity, place in history and desirability by telegraph collectors. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your perspective, there are no official price guides for old keys. Part of this is due to there being no dealers that make their living buying and selling antique telegraph instruments. There is no commercial market and a commercial market is what is needed to establish prices.
There are of course antique dealers that have a few keys once in a while, but that hardly constitutes a thriving market.
